JAKE PEAVY WINS THE NL CY YOUNG AWARD IN 2007

As expected, San Diego Padres hurler Jake Peavy took home the National League Cy Young Award on Thursday.   In a feel-good story for all of us in America’s finest city, Peavy won the award unanimously — only the 12 time its happened in that fashion — after spending eight years in the Padre organization, after being drafted in the 15th round as a skinny country bumpkin out of Mobile, Alabama where he went 44-1 in his high school career.

“I’m dang proud to stand in front of the people and accept the award on behalf of this city and this franchise,” Peavy said yesterday.

Despite reading reports predicting he would win the Cy Young, Peavy said he was surprised when he got the official phone call yesterday morning.

“You’ve got my word,” Peavy told the Padres gathering, “I’m going to come back as hungry as ever and try to repeat this performance.”  [LINK TO STORY]

No let downs for next year, little buddy.  Hopefully GM Kevin Towers will spend a buck this off-season to get a bat or two for ya.   I know I’ll be spending a buck or two if I run into you at the Star Bar this off-season to celebrate by throwing back a Jagermeister….or two.
